GUBI’s Semi Pendant Lamp: a 1968 geometric classic, reintroduced with intent

A Danish silhouette that still reads as new
The Semi Pendant is one of those rare lamps that feels both specific to its era and oddly current. Its profile is clean and architectural, with a wide spread that naturally suits shared surfaces. GUBI’s edition keeps the original idea intact: a clear geometry that’s easy to live with. For background on the model and its intent, see GUBI Semi Pendant.

Where it sits within GUBI
GUBI’s lighting catalog often revisits defining modern pieces and places them in a contemporary interior vocabulary. The Semi Pendant is positioned as a versatile “anchor” light—strong enough to stand alone, calm enough to repeat in multiples—within the broader Semi family (Semi Pendant collection). For the brand-facing view of the designers behind it, GUBI’s profile is a useful reference (Bonderup & Thorup). For our own listing, see the Product page.

A competition piece turned everyday staple
Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup designed Semi in 1968, developing it as a decisive shift away from the softer, organic mood then associated with Danish interiors—choosing sharper lines and a more explicit geometry instead. GUBI notes the design was submitted to a competition at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, where it won first prize (GUBI product notes; GUBI collection notes). A complementary designer overview is also published by Design Within Reach.
What the form does in a room
The recognizable “back-to-back quarter circles” construction yields a broad, arched shade that reads graphic from a distance and precise up close. In use, that flare matters: the light is directed downward in a generous cone, making the lamp feel appropriate over dining tables, islands, and work surfaces rather than as purely atmospheric lighting. The silhouette is bold, but the experience is straightforward—center it, hang it low enough to define the zone, and let the shade do the visual organizing.

Installation story
A customer report notes deliveries began on December 31, 2025, and their selected configuration was the Ø47 size in a black semi-matt finish. In photos, the darker shade emphasizes the lamp’s cut-clean outline, reading more like an object than a decorative flourish. It’s the kind of install where the “design” is mostly in the proportion and placement—once it’s up, it simply holds the room together.
Best rooms for it—and why
The Semi Pendant works best in spaces that benefit from a clearly defined center: dining areas, kitchen prep zones, and open-plan rooms that need a visual boundary without adding furniture. Its geometry pairs naturally with Scandinavian and Nordique interiors, but it also sits comfortably alongside contemporary, minimal, or even slightly eclectic rooms—so long as the surrounding pieces respect its strong outline. If you’re building a lighting plan, it’s most convincing when treated as the main task-and-gathering pendant, not a background accent.
